Tonight, we went to the Vince Lombardi Award of Excellence Dinner Ball.
"Created in 1990, the Vince Lombardi Award of Excellence Dinner Ball was created as a means of recognizing individuals who have made a Hall of Fame contribution to sport, profession or business in a manner that exemplifies appreciation of God, country, society, family and self, not only for the sport, profession or business involved, but to the men, women and children whose lives are enhanced by emulating those standards...[it is] awarded annually at the charity dinner ball to one whom has captured the spirit of commitment and pursuit of excellence; standards which define the legendary coach Vince Lombardi and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation."
Liz and I were incredibly fortunate to have been invited to this black tie event by Dr. Tjoe. We had the opportunity to sit at a table with three women (and their spouses), all of whom are breast cancer survivors and members of Team Phoenix. I was seated next to a delightful woman named Heidi who spoke about her own journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer (and the familiar urge to do nothing but snuggle up in bed with all of her loved ones), how she fought to rise out of fear and depression to make sure she was a strong role model for her two daughters, and her thoughts on diet, exercise (triathlon training!) and support groups. We enjoyed a lovely meal while listening to Bart Starr (former Green Bay Packer Quarterback) and his wife of 60 years, Cherry. They spoke beautifully about their 44 years of experience as Honorary Chairpersons of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, then announced their retirement from the Foundation -- we're so happy to have attended the event before they retired! The 2014 award was given to Robin Yount (former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop and center fielder). Before we headed home for some much needed rest, we picked up the gift cards to Blue's Egg & Maxie's that we won in the silent auction, along with our "prom photo." :) What a special, inspiring and all-around fabulous night!
